Kleine Spree

Confluence of Big and Little Spree Spree joke: The water of the iron-rich Little Spree stands out clearly.

The Small Spree, Upper Sorbian Mała Sprjewja , is a 40 km long left tributary of the River Spree in Saxony. Its catchment area covers an area of 273 km ².

River

The Little Spree lies entirely in the eastern part of the district of Bautzen. It branches at the distribution weir between Klix and Spreewiese (municipality Grossdubrau ) from the main run of the Spree to the left, then traverses in a north-westerly direction, the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape and the nascent Lusatian Lakeland and leads finally a few kilometers south of Spremberg in Spree joke again the Spree, is mentioned in the course of the inland Delta and Big Spree.

The lying in the region of the Lusatian Lakeland lower reaches of the Little River Spree was - like the Big Spree - repeatedly installed and used for the drainage of surface mining as well as for flooding assistance of the resulting residual lakes. This relates to the opencast mines Dreiweibern, washer and Burghammer and the products formed therefrom and the Little Spree interconnected memory Dreiweibern, washer and Burghammer. Decades of mining impairment it is rich in iron and stands at the confluence with the Great River Spree in Spreewitz color distinct from the main arm off.

Probably today's Small Spree uses the original course of the river Spree, while today's Great River Spree is merely the historical lower reaches of the Löbauer water. That would explain the significant and diverse expression of the floodplain of the Little River Spree. In old maps the names of the two arms are often interchanged.

The Little Spree was straightened in the years 1966-1973 between Spreewiese and Lohsa in large parts. However, parts of the Altlaufes have been preserved, including at Kauppa and Milkel.
