Floating islands

The Small Arber five kilometers south of the village as well as on the territory of the municipality Lohberg (Oberpfalz ) is one of three cirque lakes of the Bavarian Forest. On the Czech side of this large forest, located in the Bohemian Forest another five cirque lakes. Description

The Small Arber Lake has a total area of ​​63,600 m². He has a very low pH of 4.5 to, according to other data but 5.51. Due to this low pH of the lake is de facto fish free. Only microbes can survive in this environment.

A special feature of the two Arber Lakes ( Little and Big Arbersee ) are the so-called floating mats, which sit on the shore and outgrowth against the water surface. In particular, the Little Arbersee is this unusual natural phenomenon admire. They were created after 1885, when the lake was dammed by about a meter to the pastures of the wood. Here, the lake enlarged from 2.9 hectares to 9.6 hectares. At the same time Moorfilze have detached from the shore, and drove for a long time as " floating islands " on the lake. For some years, but their position is stable. In places, the islands have a thickness of 1.5 to 3.5 meters, so that even 40 - to 60 -year-old spruce trees growing on them. The largest island has an area of ​​4,500 m². The water depth varies, according to measurements mid-90s, 6-10 meters.

The nature reserve

The Reserve Small Arber Lake was created on 28 November 1959. It has a size of 307.5 ha and comprises surrounding the lake, marshes and woodlands. The Protection Ordinance of 1984 provides that the islands do not enter and the waters, involving vessels should not be attempted. Because of a temporary exemption thereof but in 1998 rowboats were given until the end. Today there is marked trails throughout the conservation area. Dogs must be leashed. Baden - even sunbathing is prohibited. Otters and beavers were able to resettle here. Even the elusive capercaillie here has a place of refuge. A rare species of quaking is the Moororchidee found here Swamp Weichorchis.
