As part of the cliff a tectonic ceiling ( thrust sheet ) is referred to in the tectonics, which thus is no longer completely separated by erosion from the main body of the ceiling and in physical contact with it. Cliffs are tectonically higher ( hanging wall ) than the host rocks and are completely surrounded by tectonically underlying rocks, the footwall. In active mountain ranges such as the Alps are found mainly as a summit cliffs ( cliffs ) or high ridges constituent units or in the core of synclines ( troughs ).
