Kliptown

Province

Kliptown is a district of Soweto, which in turn is a part of Johannesburg in South Africa. 1955, the People's Congress took place there, where the Freedom Charter was adopted.

Geography

The former Township Kliptown lies approximately 17 kilometers southwest of the center of Johannesburg, east of the river Klipspruit ( " Rocky Stream "). 2011, the district had officially 7,548 inhabitants. It consists mainly of informal settlements. The infrastructure is mostly bad; Unemployment is around 70 percent.

To the west lies the district Dlamini, Pimville east and south of Eldorado Park.

History

The district was built on the land of the farm Klipspruit from 1891, making it the first settlement of the later Soweto. From 1903, it came to the construction of informal settlements. In the apartheid era Kliptown was a district for coloreds. On 25 and June 26, 1955 took place here under the open sky of the Congress of the People ( " NPC " ) held at the 3,000 delegates of the anti -apartheid groups, African National Congress, South African Indian Congress, South African Congress of Democrats and Coloured People's Organisation together the freedom Charter ( " freedom Charter " ) adopted. Traffic

Kliptown is close to the M68 road ( Motorway 68). The Kliptown railway station north-east of the district is served by regional trains.
