Klooga ( German Lodensee or Lonsee ) is a village ( alevik ) in the Estonian Harju County. It has 969 inhabitants ( 1 January 2000). Klooga administratively belongs to the rural community of Keila.

Location

Klooga lies on the northern shore of the lake. The lake is 1.85 km ² in size and up to 3.66 m deep. He feeds the river Vasalemma.

From Klooga leads an electrified rail link to Tallinn, Paldiski and the Baltic Sea resort of Kloogaranna.

Mansion Klooga

Famous is especially the Baltic German manor of Klooga. It was built in the first half of the 18th century in the Baroque style. 1794 two-story building was enlarged and remodeled. Today only ruins are still preserved. The mansion is under the name Lodijärve loss scene of the famous Estonian narrative Tasuja ( " The Avengers " ) by Eduard Bornhöhe.

World War II

Near the village, the German occupation forces established a concentration camp Klooga in September 1943. In the labor camp, a satellite camp of KZ Vaivara, up to 3,000 prisoners were housed. On 19 September 1944, the SS murdered about 2,500 of them before the Red Army invaded the village.
