Knez Mihailova Street

The Knez Mihailova Street (Serbian Улица кнез Михаилова / Ulica Knez Mihailova Street ) is the most famous avenue in the Serbian capital Belgrade. As traffic pedestrian zone, it is a major shopping center, which is characterized by representative buildings which were built 1870-1925.

History

The road follows the ancient power of the Roman castrum Singidunum. During the Ottoman era were on the street gardens, fountains and mosques. In the mid-19th century, the upper road from Gardens of Alexander Karadjordjević was taken. After the implementation of the city regulation (1867 ) under Emilijan Josimović the road got its present appearance. The wealthy citizens of the city built in the street their homes. Famous buildings

The oldest neoclassical building in the street is the Hotel Srpska kruna of 1869 compared to the Kalemegdan. From 1945 to 1970, here was the National Library of Serbia, today it is all the library of the City of Belgrade.
