Anoxypristis cuspidata

Anoxypristis cuspidata is a species of the family of sawfish and the only member of the genus Anoxypristis. The fish live in the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, in New Guinea, off the south coast of Japan and the north coast of Australia.

Features

The body of Anoxypristis cuspidata is haiartig with distinct wing-like pectoral fins, the top is gray with pale white fins, the underside also pale white. The head is flat armed with a sword-shaped, well-proportioned muzzle with 18 to 22 pairs of laterally projecting, triangular teeth. The largest known specimen had a total length of 4.70 m, unconfirmed is a catch of 6.10 m.

Way of life

The fish live near the coast in shallow water between 0 and 40 m, preferably in river deltas, occasionally they also swim up rivers. They feed on smaller fish and cuttlefish. Anoxypristis cuspidata, like all sawfish, ovoviviparous.
