Knœringue

Knœringue ( German Knöringen, alsatian Knehrige ) is a commune with 355 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the district Mulhouse, on the Canton Huningue and founded the 1996 Association of Municipalities Porte du Sundgau.

Geography

The municipality is located in Knœringue Sundgau, about 30 km from Mulhouse. By Knœringue flows the valley creek, a right tributary of the River Ill.

Neighboring communities of Knœringue are Berentzwiller in the north, Ranspach -le-Haut in northeastern, Michel -le -Haut in the east, Muespach -le-Haut in the south and Muespach the southwest and west.

History

During archaeological excavations were tools, including an ax found. There were probably around 58 BC, a battle between Folgensbourg and Knœringue. The village appears to have been founded by Alemanni, since the place name ends with -ingen. 1090 was the village Cnoringen, and in 1289 there were in documents already a village community. In August 1445 the village was destroyed and in 1634 was taken by the Thirty Years War affected. 1648 immigrants came mainly from Switzerland. Since 1790 it belongs to the canton Huningue. Even the Second World War went to Knœringue not pass without a trace. On November 20, 1944, the village was liberated by the French army.
