Knowledge organization

In knowledge organization we group different approaches, methods and systems together for the development and organization of the information provided or expressed with them knowledge. In particular, the documentation play - that is, collecting, developing, organizing and making available - as well as the information and knowledge management a role.

Differences for knowledge representation

While the organization of knowledge, the focus is on the development and order existing knowledge with the help of metadata, one tries to map directly within the knowledge representation information. The knowledge is there represented in a system by appropriate deputy. However, the boundaries are blurred, as most systems for knowledge organization already represent certain structures and each requires a certain knowledge representation structure. Also, glossaries and encyclopedias contain both broader and narrower terms (organization) as well as definitions (representation ).

Instruments and Methods

In general, the organization of knowledge is done with the help of different types of concept systems ( Knowledge Organization Systems) that will help, among other things, establish a systematic, controlled and consistent terminology.

The knowledge organization uses into account both traditional, proven tools and methods, as well as more recent approaches that support the development process. There is a fundamental distinction between the formal development and content indexing. While rules, authority files and standards were used as instruments primarily in the formal development (eg in libraries for the development of formal criteria, such as author, title, etc. ), used in the content indexing mainly documentation languages as a tool.

The content analysis can be divided into the creation of content information (reviews, abstracts and annotations) and the content identification by notations ( result of the classification in the rough opening ) and keywords ( indexing result of the detailed indexing ). In the thematic development of pre-combined coarse classifications and faceted classifications serve as a tool for the detailed indexing thesauri are used. The latter are particularly terminological control (eg merging of synonyms and homonyms of control, standardization of different word forms, lexicalization of paraphrases or decompounding ). Other instruments that are used in the development process, inter alia, Register ( provide an alternative access to the contents of the documents) and tables of contents.

Examples

Examples of systems for knowledge organization are library catalogs and tables of contents.
