Knox County (Illinois)

The Knox County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 52 919 inhabitants and a population density of 28.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Galesburg.

Geography

The County is located in western Illinois between the located about 40 km west of the Mississippi and the Illinois River, which is situated about 30 km to the east. The Knox County has an area of 1864 km ², of which 9 km ² water surface are. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Knox County was formed January 13, 1825 from the free territory of Illinois and the northern part of Fulton County. It was named after Henry Knox (1750-1806), an officer of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War, the first Secretary of War under George Washington in the United States was later ( 1789-1794 ).

In the period 1825-1838, the size of the county changed several times. The first county seat was until 1831 when John B. Gum in Henderson, Henderson was followed until 1872, later renamed Knoxville, county seat of Knox County.
