Knutange

In Knut ( German Kneuttingen ) is a commune with 3247 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Thionville -Ouest and the Canton Algrange.

Geography

Knutange is located on the Fensch, about twelve kilometers south-west of Thionville, at an altitude 196-366 m above sea level. The municipality covers 2.43 km ².

Landmark of the village is 260 meters long railway bridge over the Fenschtal ( Viaduc de Knutange ) on the line Lille- Thionville.

History

Knutange was first mentioned in 1193 as Cneutengis and is named after a Frankish landowners named Knuto. The place came to France in 1659.

The community has a long industrial history. The smelter Kneuttingen was from 1895 to the 1970s in operation.
