Ko Lanta District

Ko Lanta ( Thai: เกาะลันตา ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district ) in the south of the province ( Changwat ) Krabi, Southern Thailand. The province of Krabi is located about 810 km south of Bangkok. Ko Lanta is also the name of a small island in the Straits of Malacca.

Geography

Ko Lanta consists of two islands, which are both part of the " Mu Ko Lanta National Park " ( อุทยานแห่งชาติ หมู่ เกาะลันตา ). They are called " Lanta Yai " ( เกาะลันตา ใหญ่, wholesale Lanta, with an extension of about 27 km long and 12-15 km wide ) and " Lanta Noi " ( เกาะลันตา น้อย, small - Lanta ). Ko Lanta Yai in the north is separated from Ko Lanta Noi in the south by about one kilometer wide, natural sea water ride. While Lanta Noi is almost uninhabited, Lanta Yai is heavily developed.

Demography

Ko Lanta Yai has about 20,000 inhabitants, predominantly Muslim fishermen. About 4 % of the population are Chinese -born merchants, about 1 % belong to the ethnic group of Moken, which are often referred to as " sea gypsies ". History

The county Ko Lanta was established in December 1901.

The origin of the name is unclear, it may comes from the Javanese word Lanta, which refers to a type of fish barbecue. The county received in 1917 officially named " Ko Lanta ".

Management

Ko Lanta is divided ( tambon) in five municipalities, which in turn in 37 village communities ( Muban ) are divided.

Ko Lanta Yai ( เทศบาล ตำบล เกาะลันตา ใหญ่ ) is also the name of a small town ( thesaban tambon) in the district, it consists of parts of the tambon Ko Lanta Yai.

There are also five " Tambon Administrative Organizations" (TAO, องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - administrative organizations) in the district.
