The University Kōchi (Japanese高 知 大学, Kōchi daigaku ) is a national university in Japan. The main campus is located in the prefecture Kōchi Kōchi.

History

The (older) Kōchi University was founded in 1949 by the merger of three state schools. The three were:

  • High school Kōchi (高 知 高等学校, Kōchi Kōtō Gakko, founded in 1922 ),
  • The normal school Kōchi (高 知 师范学校, Kōchi shihan Gakko, founded in 1874 ), and
  • Youth Normal School Kōchi (高 知 青年 师范学校, Kōchi his shihan Gakko, founded in 1923 ).

The high school Kōchi, the predecessor of the Humanities and the Faculty of Sciences, was in Ozu- campus in the city Kōchi (now the seat of the affiliated elementary and secondary schools of the Faculty of Education. 33 ° 33 ' 56 "N, 133 ° 31' 45 " O33.565483333333133.52913055556 ). Their motto was the word of the first Rector (1923 ), for example: " Youth, 're thrilled! A life without enthusiasm is empty and hollow " (Japanese感激 あれ 若人 よ,感激 なき 人生 は 空虚 なり). The high school served as a preparatory course for the Imperial Universities. Its campus was used until 1960 by the Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences.

The Normal School Kōchi, the predecessor of the Faculty of Education, was located since 1947 in what is now Asakura campus, located in a former military base of the Imperial Japanese Army, because they lost the school building in the Pacific War. Since 1964, the university administration is located in Asakura campus.

In 2003, the (older) Kōchi University and the Medical University Kōchi (高 知 医科大学, Kōchi ika daigaku, founded in 1976 ) merged to the newer University Kōchi.
