Kodokan

The Kodokan [ ko ː do ː kan ] (Japanese讲道 馆; " Hall of the Way" ) is the oldest and most important judo school in the world. It is located in the Tokyo district of Bunkyō and was founded in 1882 by the founder of judo, Kano Jigorō.

As the most important Japanese judo school, the Kodokan specifies guidelines on which to orient the world judo associations. It is, for example, a desire of many judoka to standardize the now very diverse variations of Judo Kata again, where reference was made to the learned from the Kodokan version of the kata. The Kodokan has thus also the function to preserve the purity of Judo as Kano Jigorō taught.
