Koen Geens

Koen Geens ( born January 22, 1958 in Brasschaat ) is a Belgian legal scholar and professor of corporate law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Since March 5, 2013, is a Belgian Finance Minister in the government Di Rupo.

Life

Geens studied law - initially for two years at the Universitaire Faculteiten Sint- Ignatius Antwerpen (now University of Antwerp ), then at the KULeuven - and graduated in 1980 with honors. He then went to Harvard University, where in 1981 he earned his Master of Laws. 1986 doctorate Geens at the KULeuven for Doctor juris and was awarded for his dissertation in 1987 with the State Prize of the Flemish Community of Law and Economics and in 1989 with the price Baron Emile van Dievoet. Geens taught since 1986 as a lecturer at the KULeuven and was appointed professor in 1992. Since 1983 he is a member of the Council of the Faculty of Law and he is since 1986 director by Jan Ronse Institute for Company Law.

His practice law received Geens in 1989. Since 1994 he has worked for the law firm Eubelius in Brussels. In addition Geens from 1992 to 2000 Chairman of the Hoge Raad voor de Economische Beroepen and from 1999 to 2005, President of the Federatie voor en Vrije Intellectuele Beroepen. Geens was from 1992, along with Anne Benoit- Moury science from the University of Liège coordinator for the codification of the Belgian company law, which resulted in the adoption of the Companies Code in 1999. From 2007 to February 2009 Geens was also Head of Cabinet for Economic Affairs of the Flemish Prime Minister Kris Peeters.

Geens is chief editor of the Tijdschrift voor Rechtspersoon s Vennootschap and appearing in the Kluwer Publishing loose-leaf commentary on corporate law ( " Overzicht vennootschappen s Veren. Artikelsgewijze commentaries ").

In 2009 Geens candidate for the vacant post of August 1, 2009 Rector of the KULeuven. He scored in the first round of voting with 358 votes in second place, but could unite only 573 votes in the second round and thus subject to Mark Waer, who scored 682 votes.

Geens is married and father of two children.
