History

In the Russian Civil War Kogon served as a springboard for the conquest of the Emirate of Bukhara by the Red Army. In August 1920 the Red Army concentrated in Kogon.

Geography

Kogon is located about 10 km east of the provincial capital, Bukhara. It is the capital of the eponymous district Kogon, even though a city.

Economy and infrastructure

Kogon is a major transportation hub: The city lies on the Trans- Caspian railway; the train connects Sharq Kogon with Tashkent. From 1998 to 2008 Kogon was connected by a trolleybus with Bukhara.

Events

On 9 and 10 July 2008, there was in Kogon on a military base in a rocket and ammunition to a greater number of explosions. The city was initially completely evacuated. A variety stores and the train station were damaged. According to official sources at least three people were killed and injured 60 people. Even in the city center of Bukhara, the explosions were felt and window panes were broken.
