Kokborok (also Tripuri ) is a language that is spoken by the Tripuri in the Indian state of Tripura and its neighboring regions in Bangladesh. The name Kokborok consists of the words Kok (language) and Borok ( here: the Tripuri ) together.

Kokborok is on record as early as the 1st century AD. The language was then written in the Koloma font and used primarily to describe tripurischer kings. Since 1979, the language is the official language of the State of Tripura. The recognition of language as a national language of India is still under discussion.

The phonetics of Kokborok corresponds to the phonetics of the most Tibeto - Burmese languages.

The Koloma font has been out of use since the 19th century Kokborok is written in the Bengali script. After India's independence and the Tripuras connection to India, however, the Latin alphabet is used increasingly. The question of which font should be given preference, is a subject of political debate. At the moment, both fonts in use.
