Kokopo

Kokopo ( to 1914 Herbert height ) is the seventh largest city of Papua New Guinea and the capital of East New Britain Province on the island of New Britain.

Geography

Kokopo is located 30 km from the former provincial capital of Rabaul away, is accessible on the Kokopo - Highway and has an airport.

The town had 20,262 inhabitants, with almost ten times as many as in 1980, when he scored only 2,200 inhabitants in 2000. After the devastating eruption of the volcano Tavurvur on 19 September 1994, most residents Rabauls fled hither and settled here permanently. History

Kokopo was the time of the colony of German New Guinea Herbertshöhe and was from 1899 to 1910 the capital of the whole colony and the seat of the governor.

Emma Forsayth - Coe ( Queen Emma of the South Pacific ), had a house in Kokopo, which was destroyed in the Second World War.

In this place, and on the nearby island of Kabakon the story takes place around the dropouts August Engelhardt, the Paradise of August Engelhardt (2011 ) and Christian Kracht in the Roman Empire (2012 ) was processed in literature by the authors Marc Buhl in the novel.
