Kolenkit District

The Kolenkitbuurt ( Kolenkitviertel ) is a neighborhood in the borough of Amsterdam West ( North Holland ). The quarter in 2009 had 11.5 % unemployed and standing in the ranking of the " 20 troubled districts " in the Netherlands. In early 2009 there were 7070 inhabitants, of which 80 to 85 % are foreign citizens.

History

The Kolenkitbuurt is limited by the Rijksweg 10 (short: A10), the Erasmus canal and the Haarlemmerweg. The district was created after the Second World War and the 1950 years, the first homes were built. The district was named after the 1956 built Opstandingskerk ( German: Church of the Resurrection ), which is popularly known also Kolenkit. The church cost 850,000 guilders and was designed by the Dutch architect Mariuá Duintjer.

Activities

In June 2012, the Cinema Al Kolenkit festival was organized on the Ernest Staesplein with film, readings, discussions and workshops.
