Kolhapur district
The district Kolhapur ( Marathi: कोल्हापूर जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts in the state of Maharashtra in India. The city of Kolhapur is the administrative center of the district. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 3,876,001 people.
Population
The urban population accounts for only 31.73 percent of the total population. A clear vast majority of the population are Hindus. Smaller minorities are the Muslims, Jains and Buddhists. In 2001, of 3,523,162 inhabitants, 3,077,263 Hindus ( 87.34 percent), 236 875 Muslims ( 6.72 percent), 147 285 Jains ( 4.18 percent ) and 37 932 Buddhists (1.08 percent). The most common colloquial languages are Marathi and Kannada.

Strongest town inhabitants of the district is Kolhapur with nearly 500,000 residents. Other important cities with a population of more than 25,000 people are Ichalkaranji, Jaysingpur, Hupari, Kabnur and Gadhinglaj.
