Kolka, Latvia

Kolka ( Liv: Kūolka, German: , potholes ') is a fishing village in the west of Latvia and the northernmost point of the region of Kurzeme.

The village lies on the prominent headland Kolkas rags (, Horn of Kolka ', Cape Kolka ', Cape Domesnäs ) the Irben - road, at the meeting of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga.

The first written mention Kolkas as inhabited place is found 1384-1387 AD The inhabitants lived from fishing and the looting of beached ships at the Cape. In Kolka now live last representative of the Livonian language and culture. The area lies within the National Park Slitere.

Management

Within the area are the towns of Kolka, Vaide, Saunags, Pitrags, Košrags, Mazirbe and Sīkrags. Since 2009, the community belongs to Dundagas novads. ( See also: Administrative divisions of Latvia. )
