Kolwezi

Province

Kolwezi is a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The city has 451 168 inhabitants and is the capital of the district Lualaba Katanga province.

The recent history Kolwezis is marked by poverty. The cholera was invading the city. The political situation is uncertain, many people were forced to flee, including Europeans.

There are significant cobalt and copper mines. They are partially foreign-owned. In the near Kolwezi is the converter station of HVDC Inga - Shaba. Likewise, there are uranium deposits in the vicinity of the city.

Kolwezi Kolwezi is the seat of the diocese.

Battle of Kowezi

On May 13, 1978 Kolwezi was cast as the most important mining town of the province of Katanga by about 4000 rebels in the so-called Shaba invasion. Finally, only through massive support by the United States of America, Belgium and France succeeded the paratroopers of the French Foreign Legion to retake the city, with 700 Africans, 280 Europeans and 5 Legionaries were killed. Legionnaires of the 2nd Regiment of the stranger paratroopers liberated in the Battle of Kolwezi on May 19, 1978 more than 2,000 European hostages from the hands of rebels.
