Ferry crosses the lake jammed lengthwise through the Drin Canyon

The Koman Reservoir ( Albanian: Liqeni i Komanit ) is a dam on the Drin in northern Albania. The in the years 1980-1988 in the gorge of Malgun ( Gryka e Malgunit ) built near the village of Koman rockfill dam with concrete outer layer is 115 meters high, consists of 600,000 m³ of material and dammed a lake of 12 km ². The water table is at 170 müa height.

The connected hydropower plant, originally named after Enver Hoxha, with four coming from France turbines a capacity of 600 MW, which was said to be the largest in Albania and Southeastern Europe at the time. Due to water shortages, electricity production in recent years had to be shut down repeatedly drastically. The Koman Reservoir is fed in addition to the fabulous shot of the Valbona and Shala River.

The Koman Reservoir is up to 96 meters deep and part of a series of dams along the drins. The Koman Reservoir extends to the dam of Fierza Reservoir ( Liqeni i Fierzës ), while the jammed from the dam Vau Deja Liqen i Vaut të Dejës reaches almost to the dam of Koman Reservoir.

The Drin had pioneered in the field of the Koman dam deep gorges in the mountains of the Albanian Alps. The lake runs like a long tube about 34 km along the narrow valley of the Drin and is barely wide the more than 400 meters. In the narrowest, surrounded by hundreds of meters high rock walls gorges of the lake is barely 50 meters wide.

A passenger ferry runs daily on Lake Koman after Fierza respectively Breg - Lum. The car ferry is canceled due to unprofitability since June 2012. The ferries open up the north-east of Albania with the city of Bajram Curr and the region of Tropoja. The journey takes about 2 ½ hours and is due to the passages between towering rock walls through narrow gorges reminiscent of Norwegian fjords, and tourists of interest. Smaller boats bring people and goods to remote villages, often far away high above the lake, but are only accessible over the water.
