Konavle

Konavle ( Italian: Valle dei Canali Canali or ) is a small region and a municipality southeast of Dubrovnik in Croatia. With Konavle usually is referred to a collection of villages and towns southeast of Dubrovnik. The seat of the municipality Konavle is located in Cavtat.

The vast majority of the population are Croats.

The Mediterranean region is part of the Dubrovnik-Neretva county. The central village is Gruda. The population of the Konavle area is 8,577 ( 2011). Overall, the area covers 32 villages.

Konavle is actually a flat field, which is situated between the mountain and the Adriatic Sea Sniježnica. The area extends from the coastal town of Cavtat to the border with Montenegro in Prevlaka. Apart from Cavtat, only the southernmost village Molunat is by the sea, while the remaining 30 are located in the hinterland.

The Sniježnica summit at 1254 m altitude is the highest mountain in the Dubrovnik-Neretva county. The village of Kuna is 700 m, the highest village in the area. Although Gruda is the administrative center of the region, this town of Cavtat is surpassed in terms of population.

The Konavle region is especially known for its unique costumes and the wine and olive growing.

Dubrovnik international airport is located near the village of Čilipi.
