Tirukoneswaram is a Shiva temple in Trincomalee. He belongs to the seven most important Shiva temples of Sri Lanka.

The history

The Tirukoneswaram temple was built on the summit of a mountain, which is known as " Swami Rock" or "Three Swami Rock". Because of its unusual size, he was known all over India. As early as the 7th century sang Tirujnana Sambandar, a Shiva temple saint in his songs. This is the earliest reference to the temple.

The Pallava kings of South India had considerable influence on the region, especially in the time of King Manavanna ( 668-703 AD), such as Sanskrit inscriptions from Tiriyayi, located 29 km north of Trincomalee testify. Presumably, the temple has been extended in the time of the Pallava dynasty. Ancient descriptions of the "Thousand Pillars" let a once great temple complex suggests.

1624 Shiva temple was razed to the ground and plundered by the Portuguese.
