Konna

Region

Konna is a town and commune in the Cercle de Mopti rural in the Mopti region in Mali. The city is located 60 km north-east of Mopti on the eastern edge of the floodplain of the Niger. The main road N15, which connects Sévaré and Gao, turns directly south of Konna to the east. The area of ​​the municipality Konna measures about 838 km2 and includes the city and 24 villages in the area. In the 2009 census, 36,767 people lived in Konna.

The market, which is held on Thursdays in the city, numerous settlements in the area is used.

Northern Mali - conflict

In January 2013, came into Konna fighting between Islamists and supported by French soldiers units of the Malian government forces. The combined Malian and French troops took the city back on January 11, after the city on the day had been previously occupied by the Islamists.
