Konrad Wallenrod

Konrad Wallenrod is a poem from 1828 by Adam Mickiewicz playing in Lithuania of the 14th century. Mickiewicz wrote the poem that should inspire the Polish-Lithuanian patriotism, against the background of Polish uprisings against Russian rule.

Mickiewicz took advantage of the strong well-known historical figure of Konrad Wallenrode, Grand Master of the Teutonic Order in the 14th century, made ​​by converts it to the protagonist of his Polish- Lithuanian patriotic poem. So in Mickiewicz 's poem Konrad Wallenrod is represented as a weaned by the Teutonic Knights Lithuanians. He is the Grand Master and Knight of the Order intentionally leads to destruction, as he is aware of his real origin.

Konrad Wallenrod was set to music twice for an opera, as I Lituani ( The Lithuanians ) Ponchielli Amilcare (1874 ); and Konrad Wallenrod Władysław Żeleński (1885 ).

The " Wallenrodismus " entered the Polish national consciousness and was quoted in the Polish uprisings of the 19th and 20th centuries.
