Konstantin Sergeyev

Konstantin Mikhailovich Sergeyev (Russian Константин Михайлович Сергеев, scientific transliteration Konstantin Sergeev Michajlovič; * 20 Februarjul / March 5 1910greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † 1 April 1992 ) was a Russian ballet dancer.

Life

Sergeyev was 1930-1961 solo dancer at the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre in Leningrad. As a master dancer, he was successful in both the classical ballets as well as in modern Russian works such as The Fountain of Tears of Bakhchisaray, Lost Illusions or The Bronze Horseman. After the change of Galina Ulanova at the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow the prima ballerina Natalia Dudinskaya became his new solo partner, whom he later married.

An injury ended his career in 1961 as principal dancer of the Kirov Ballet, and was succeeded by Rudolf Nureyev Chametowitsch. From 1951 to 1955, and from 1960 to 1970 Sergeyev was the artistic director and choreographer of the ballet company. During this time, he would particularly the tradition of classical ballet. In 1970 under his leadership, a new production of Hamlet. For his achievements Sergeyev has received several awards, including the 1970 Lenin Prize.

After fleeing the dancer Natalia Makarova during a tour through the United Kingdom Sergeyev was released in 1970 by its functions. In 1973 he was appointed director of the choreographic school back to the Kirov Ballet. In 1988, he went into retirement.
