Konstantin Somov

Konstantin Andreyevich Somov (Russian Константин Андреевич Сомов; * 18 Novemberjul / November 30 1869greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † May 6, 1939 in Paris) was a Russian painter and graphic artist.

Born the son of an art historian, he grew up in Saint Petersburg. In the period 1888-1897 he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. After graduating, he went to Paris, where he studied at a private academy in the next two years. After his return from Paris he settled down in 1899 in Saint Petersburg.

From a young age Somov became acquainted with Alexander Benois ( Benua ), Walter Nouvelle ( Nuwel ) and Dmitri Filossofow, with whom he participated in the founding of the Association I Iskusstwa. At the same time he was one of the founders of the magazine of the same name.

In 1913 he became a full member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1918 he became professor of Petrograd State Art School. Somov 1923 left Russia. Two years later he settled in France, where he died in Paris in 1939.

His works, mainly portraits and landscape paintings are now exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum.
