Life

He grew up the son of a German jeweler in St. Petersburg and attended St. Peter's School. At the age of nine, he entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he studied until 1815, inter alia, the architect Andrei Voronikhin. For some of his projects, he was awarded during his training with medals. In the years 1819-1828 he lived in Rome, to operate art studies. Here and in Florence he stayed for almost ten years.

After his return to Russia in December 1828, he was later appointed Professor in 1830 at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts as a member of the Academy of Arts and three years. In 1854 he was appointed rector of the architecture department of the Academy.

He gained with the design of the interior of the building of the St. Petersburg Academy of Art on the banks of the Neva first attention as an architect. In 1827 he submitted to the Tsar his project of St. Catherine's Church on Obwodnij channel; they should be the first building in the style of the Russian Renaissance. Thons building was a prestige project for other churches in Saint Petersburg and throughout Russia. In 1830 he completed his most ambitious project of its time, that of the Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow. Dozens of other churches and cathedrals arose subsequently in various Russian cities, as in Suomenlinna ( Finland today ), Yelets, Arzamas, Tomsk, Rostov-on- Don and Krasnoyarsk in the Neo-Byzantine building style influenced by him. In the period 1838-1851 Thon was busy with the construction of the Grand Kremlin Palace and the Armoury in Moscow.
