The station was opened to traffic on 15 June 1863, when the Baden State Railways opened the last section of the Upper Rhine Railway between Waldshut and consistency. The Swiss side of the connection came in 1871, when the Swiss Northeastern Railway (NOB ), today opened part of the lake line the route between Roman Horn and consistency. On 17 July 1875, the railway line from the Swiss National Railway (SNB ) created Etzwilen - Constance followed, including the link Kreuzlingen Kreuzlingen Hafen .. After the SNB in 1878 went bankrupt, these rail lines were taken over by the NOB. In 1902, the NOB on the newly created SBB. From 1873 to 1899 there was a ferry port for freight cars to Lindau and 1884-1917 to Bregenz.

1911 took the Mittelthurgaubahn their over mountain TG running distance of Wil SG via Weinfelden to Kreuzlingen in operation. Already from the beginning the trains from Kreuzlingen were bound on the former SNB route to Konstanz to ensure the connection to the German railway network. In the course of Seehas concept the MThB expanded its route network on the Upper Rhine Railway to Engen. 2002 MThB had to declare itself insolvent, as the capital was depleted, and was subsequently liquidated by private treaty. Since then, their operation is taken over by a subsidiary of SBB, between Konstanz and Engen by SBB GmbH and between Konstanz and Weinfelden / Wil from the Thurbo.

Architecture

Basic structure

The station is located parallel to the lake shore. The station building was built in 1863 in neo-Gothic and Renaissance modeled after the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. North of the station building of Fürstenbahnhof is obtained, a pavilion, which serves the baked goods sale today.

The station has three tracks, so a house and a central platform. To get to the middle platform, the tracks must be crossed 1 and 2. A barrier ensures security. At the northern end there is also an underpass that connects the platforms on the one hand with the city center and the other to the port. In addition, there are two walkways, one leads to the Lago shopping center.

State of repair

In the past, Constance received a reputation as a sleazy station because he was considered structurally neglected and uneconomical. The last time the bell tower has undergone in the years 1975-1983 a major refurbishment. The sandstone tower had to be packed up for 17 months with a green network to prevent sandstone boulders fall and passers-by can endanger. He was then redeveloped in the budget of around one million euros. As part of the economic stimulus programs the reception building is to be renovated with energy-related measures. Also, the waiting area should be made more attractive.

Separation DB / SBB

Constance has the function of a border station. Prior to November 2008, before Switzerland joined the Schengen Agreement, the central platform was separated by chain link fence. On the track 3 remote trains stopped in Switzerland. The station building also includes two parts - the German and the Swiss railway - the German part is still operated by the DB, the Swiss of the Thurbo (formerly Mittelthurgaubahn ). Travelers to the Swiss railway station had to 2008 customs inspection pass before they could step on the platforms. As part of ongoing since 2009 refurbishment of the station of the Swiss railway station and the German station were integrated. What to do with the building of the Swiss railway station, is not yet clear.
