The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is a recognized by the FCI breed from the Netherlands ( FCI Group 8, Section 2, Standard No. 314). It belongs to the large group of bird dogs, as well Spaniel.

Origin and History

When Kooikerhondje is a historical models since 1942 rebuilt breed, FCI recognition was granted in 1971. The Kooikerhondje was used for duck hunting, in special fishing devices, the Kooi. Description

Up to 42 cm high and 9-11 kg heavier dog with clearly defined patches of pure orange - red color on a white background. Females are usually more delicate than males. The hair is of medium length, slightly wavy ( not desired) or smooth; not curly, tight, close and shiny. Close to the cheeks hanging " Earrings" ( in Dutch " Oorbellen " called ).

Nature

A Kooiker is a very strong-minded, friendly dog ​​who needs a firm hand in the upbringing. He has a great temperament and must be busy enough. The Kooikerhondje is well suited as a family dog ​​and very willing to learn.

Use

The Kooikerhondje is mostly a companion dog, but is also used in dog sports. It used specialized Entenkooiker that has enticed by his special training in the safety gear the wild ducks. A very autonomous working dog that got through the Kooimaster feed and otherwise attracting wild ducks.

Hunting with the Kooikerhondje historically and today

In the water-rich Netherlands, with its ponds, marshes and old river arms a special fishing technique has for duck hunting mission: The hunt for ducks in a specially adapted premises with a kind of reuse, called Eendenkooi ( = literally translated duck cage). This includes the special environment: Kooigebüsch, a specific scale reed mats and obstruction from the bushes, and a small lake, where tame ducks lived that were not hunted, but served as decoys. There were breeding grounds, but also protection in severe winters.

Even today, there is this kooien, " cages ", usually but they are used scientifically, cataloging, ie for example to check the guides. The surviving termination systems of this kind are almost all under protection. Breed Specific diseases

The necrotizing myelopathy of the Kooiker Dog is occurring within the first three months of life in Kooiker dogs degeneration of the white matter, especially in the cervical cord. It manifests itself in increased reflexes and rapidly progressive paralysis and is not treatable.
