Kopeyka (supermarket)

Kopeika (Russian Копейка to German "kopeck " ) is a Russian retail chain. Similar to the chain Magnit and Pjatjorotschka it is one of the leading discount supermarket in the country.

Kopeika was founded in Moscow in 1998. At that time it was the first discounter of Russia, which was designed on the model of chains such as Aldi and Lidl. From the corporate form here Kopeika is a corporation; 100 percent of the shares are owned by the billionaire bosses of the bank Uralsib Nikolai Tsvetkov. In June 2007 there were a total of 380 Kopeika stores in 20 regions of Russia; the company's sales in 2006 amounted to 980 million U.S. dollars. Much like the other leading Russian food discounter, most markets are guided on franchising basis also at Kopeika.
