Koppers

Koppers (initially Heinrich Koppers AG or GmbH, later Krupp Koppers ) is a former engineering company with headquarters in Essen.

Koppers was one of the leading companies in the construction of coke ovens. Furthermore, planned and built Koppers coal gasification plants and other plants of the coal chemical, petrochemical and fuel technology.

The entrained flow gasification after the Koppers - Totzek procedure and after the Shell - Koppers process was developed by Koppers.

History

The company was founded in 1901 by Heinrich Koppers, after this the coking plant construction company Dr. C. Otto & Comp. (later one of the fiercest competitors ) was excreted. For Otto Koppers had developed various methods and designs. Finally it came to a rift over Koppers Koppers revolutionary ideas and started his own business in order to sell the patents, which he had filed in his time at Otto, and develop.

The superiority of Koppers design quickly became apparent and his company grew rapidly from 1904. For many years, Koppers was a world leader in carbon technology and built a variety of coking plants and other facilities in Germany and the world.

The 1938 developed by Koppers and its employees Friedrich Totzek Koppers Totzek coal gasification process was only after the Second World War in 1947 in pilot plants to use and quickly developed into a success. As a result, Koppers built several large systems of this type and types derived from it.

After the death of Heinrich Koppers 1941, the company was among other things, continued by his son Hans Heinrich Koppers. The company ran into financial difficulties later on, was taken over in 1974 by Krupp ( Krupp Koppers, later ThyssenKrupp EnCoke ) now risen and is in the ThyssenKrupp Uhde GmbH.

Offshoot

In 1912, Koppers established a subsidiary in the U.S., the Koppers Inc. in Chicago. This worked numerous jobs that Koppers had received from U.S. Steel. Later Heinrich Koppers sold the company with the related patents to the investor and later U.S. Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, under whose ownership it moved to Pittsburgh. The Koppers Inc. still exists today and is still active in plant construction and coal chemistry.

An offshoot of the Koppers Inc. is the subsidiary was founded in 1960 Sigdo Koppers in Chile. 1974 this was sold and today Sigdo Koppers is a highly diversified conglomerate and one of the largest companies in Chile.

Headquarters

The 1911 -built administrative building of H. Koppers on Moltkestraße 29 in Essen Moltkeviertel is now used as office and commercial buildings. In the ensuing Villa Koppers, Moltkeplatz 61, the private residence of Heinrich Koppers family, the International School Ruhr has its headquarters
