Korahe-Zone

The Korahe zone ( Somali Qorahey, Ge'ez ቆራሄ ) is an administrative zone of the Somali region in Ethiopia.

It is located approximately in the center of the region and is bordered to the far east to Somalia. According to 2007 census, it had 312,713 inhabitants, of whom 47 607 were living in urban areas. In 1997, of 242 276 inhabitants, 98.75 % Somali, 99.13 % spoke Somali as their first language. 5.88% ( 14,256 ) were able to read and write. The Somali in Korahe mainly belong to the clan of the Darod - Ogadeni.

The Korahe zone is divided into the four woredas Kebri Dehar, Shekosh, Debeweyn and Shilabo. Larger towns in the Korahe zone are Kebri Dehar, Shekosh, Debeweyn and Shilabo.

In the Woreda Shilabo the natural gas fields of Calub and hilala lie. Main livelihood of the population is agriculture, especially livestock. In the valley of Fafen that runs through the middle of the zone, is the keeping of cattle, sheep and goats with the cultivation of sorghum and maize supplemented ( Agropastoralismus ). East of Fafen Valley dominates the nomadic operated Raising of camels, sheep and goats. West of Fafen camels as well as sheep and cattle are raised. About Kebri Dehar cattle is further exported to Burao and Berbera in northern Somalia / Somaliland and from there into the countries of the Arabian Peninsula or in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

The Korahe zone is affected by the conflict between the separatist ONLF and the Ethiopian army, which has worsened since 2007. According to Human Rights Watch, especially the army has committed human rights violations against civilians in the zone. Especially in the area of the cities Warder ( Warder in the contiguous zone) and Shilabo villages were forcibly evacuated and then partially or totally burned.
