Korakuen Stadium

The Korakuen Stadium (Japanese后 楽 园 球场, Kōrakuen KYUJO ) was a 1937 built baseball stadium in Tokyo. It could seat some 30,000 spectators. Besides baseball games were also other sporting events such as boxing matches or football games held at Korakuen. After the 1987 season, it was demolished to make way for the construction of the Tokyo Dome.

The stadium was always the home of the Yomiuri Giants, Nippon Ham Fighters and the long or their precursors Tōkyū Flyers. In the 1950s there was also due to the Daiei Unions, the Kokutetsu Swallows and the Mainichi Orions from their home games, so that the Korakuen Stadium temporarily housed five baseball teams.

In 1970 the upper grandstands were extended above the outfield, thus increasing the capacity to 10,000 spectators. 1976 was laid artificial turf inside - then a novelty in Japanese baseball. In the same year a preseason game of the National Football League ( NFL) took place in Korakuen Stadium, the first game of the NFL outside of North America.
