Korea Aerospace Research Institute

The Korea Aerospace Research Institute ( KARI ) is the aeronautics and space agency of South Korea.

The KARI was established in 1981. Since the start of South Korea in the IAEA in 1992, the research mainly focused on the aerospace technology.

The main center of the KARI is located in the city of Daejeon, in the local Daedeok Science Town.

Projects KARI are eg the Korea Space Launch Vehicle or the Arirang satellite from 1999.

Korean astronaut program

On 25 December 2006, the two South Korean candidates for a flight on the Soyuz TMA -12 to the International Space Station (ISS ), a man and a woman, during an event at the SBS Broadcasting Center in Dongchon -dong in Seoul were selected. Was preceded by a selection process from a total of 36,000 applicants.

  • Yi So-yeon (28, researcher at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology)
  • Ko San (30, scientists at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology)

This winning couple has gone through spring 2007 at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre near Moscow a 15-month training astronauts. First, Ko San was selected for flight. On March 10, the replacement of the candidates was announced. During the training Ko San had gained access to documents on the Soyuz control, which is not allowed under the rules for foreign candidates. Thus in April 2008 the Korean Yi So-yeon is flown aboard Soyuz TMA -12 to the International Space Station to perform there for about eight days of scientific experiments.

  • Lee Jin -young ( 36 pilot in the South Korean Air Force )
  • Jang Joon -sung (25, police officer in the Nambu Police Station in Bucheon )
  • Ryu Jeong -won (33, chief executive at IT Magic Co.)
  • Lee Han - gyu (33, scientists at Samsung SDI)
  • Choi Ah - jeong (24, a student at Seoul National University )
  • Kim Young- min (33, scientists at the Korea Basic Science Institute )
