Korea Institute for Advanced Study

The Korea Institute for Advanced Study ( KIAS 한국 고등 과학원韩国 高等 科学院) is a research institute for mathematics, physics, and quantitative sciences in Seoul.

History

The KIAS was founded in December 1995. In August 1996, Efim Zelmanov for " Distinguished Professor " appointed for mathematics. In October 1996, the opening of the KIAS was held in November 1996, the Institute of Mathematics and Physics began their work. In August 1999, Leonard Susskind for " Distinguished Professor " appointed for physics. In September 2000, the Institute for Quantitative Sciences ( "computational sciences" ) began its work. Since 2006 there is the " KIAS Scholar Program". 2010, the " Center for Advanced Computation" and opened the " Center for Mathematical Challenges" 2013.

Operation

Currently (2013 ) the Institute two "Distinguished Professor" belong to, 23 tenured professors, 25 " KIAS Scholars " and 103 " Research Fellows ". KIAS Scholars are visiting scientists who spend several months per year for a period of 3 years at the Institute. Research Fellows will be employed for a period of 2-4 years at the Institute.

The processed at the Institute topics include algebraic geometry and differential geometry, astrophysics, particle physics and string theory, statistical physics, bioinformatics, and quantum information.

The Institute is funded by the state and is formally affiliated with the KAIST.
