Kornel Ujejski

Kornel Ujejski ( born September 12, 1823 in Beremiany; † September 19, 1897 in Pavlov in Lviv ) was a Polish writer.

The son of a landowner first attended a church school in Buczacz and then studied in Lviv. Here he met writers such as Leszek Dunin- Borkowski, Wincenty Pol and Karol Szajnocha know and wrote the patriotic poem Maraton 1843. For a stay in Warsaw he met Kazimierz Władysław Woycicki, Paulina Wilkońska and Teofil Lenartowicz know.

After he had taken part in clandestine actions, he went in 1847 to Paris. Here he attended lectures by Adam Mickiewicz at the Sorbonne and wrong with Józef Bohdan Zaleski, Frédéric Chopin and Juliusz Słowacki. He participated in the February Revolution of 1848 and then returned to Poland.

Here he was again involved in revolutionary endeavors. Although he was not active in the January Uprising, but stood with a secret revolutionary organization in contact. For the publication of his collection of poems Thu Moskali ( At the Muscovites ), he was put on trial in 1863. As a member of the Imperial Council he sat apart in 1877-78 with the conservative grouping of Stańczycy.

Ujejski is considered the last great romantic poet of Poland. By the early 1860s the majority of his major poems were composed. His patriotic hymn ( "Z dymem pożarów .. " ) circulated in the mid-19th century in numerous copies in Poland and was in the setting by Józef Nikorowicz the anthem of the Polish independence movement.
