Korsholm

Korsholm ( Swedish), Finnish Korsholm, is a village in the countryside Ostrobothnia in western Finland. It is the historic core of the city of Vaasa, which was, however, moved to a major fire in 1852 on the shore of the Baltic Sea. The rural community of Korsholm encompasses so today the area around the city of Vaasa and some islands in the Gulf of Bothnia. Around 72 % of the population are Finland Sweden, 26 % are Finnish speakers. Officially, the municipality is bilingual.

History

The village was mentioned in 1348 under its Finnish name Korsholm (Eng. " Black Island " ) for the first time. After 1370 the Swedes built a castle at this point, which was the center of power of Ostrobothnia landscape for centuries. In 1606 the town was awarded its town charter and after the ruling royal family in the name of Wasa (Finnish Vaasa ) renamed. In the following years, Vaasa has become one of the few urban centers in Finland.

On 13 August 1852, the almost entirely built of wood city was destroyed by a major fire. The new city Wasa was rebuilt around 7 miles away on the coast. The ruins of the destroyed castle and also the built in the 14th century St. Mary's church bear witness to the ancient city of Vaasa. Was spared from the fire and the town church was built in 1775.

The resulting after laying Vasas rural community Korsholm took in 1927 alongside their Finnish Swedish as an official name of Korsholm. The church today Korsholm / Korsholm was formed in 1973 from the merger of the municipalities Korsholm, Kvevlax, replot, Bjorko and parts of the community Solf.

In 1997, the longest suspension bridge in Finland was opened in Korsholm. The Replotbron (Finnish Raippaluodon silta ) has a length of 1,045 meters and connects the island replot ( Raippaluoto ) to the mainland. Its construction cost about 150 million euros.
