Kortatu

Kortatu was a Basque ska -punk band that was founded in 1984 in Irun, Guipuzcoa in the Basque Country. The band's name comes from the nickname of a perished in the hands of the Spanish police ETA member.

Because of their sometimes also sung in Basque texts in which they also support the Basque desire for independence, they are considered part of the radical Basque rock.

Characteristic of their style is an explosive mixture of ska and punk elements, which are underpinned by occasional reggae deposits.

Band History

Kortatu was founded together with Treku Armandariz (drums) in 1984 by the brothers Fermin (vocals, guitar) and Iñigo Muguruza (bass, background vocals).

Soon after, they recorded their first demo and tour in 1985 by the Basque Country with performances at various festivals and side trips to Madrid and Barcelona.

In the same year they recorded their first album " Kortatu ". This plate is still largely sung in Spanish and made it known in the country (it was also chosen by some magazines for record of the year ). Kortatu played the part in front of 15,000 spectators.

1986 was followed by a tour of Europe with concerts in Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands, and the publication of two works: The Maxi Single " A la calle " and the LP " El estado de las cosas " ( also still largely in Spanish). At least with this record they became known throughout Spain.

The entire year 1987 they spent on tour ( also in France and again in Switzerland and Germany ). "A Frontline Compilation" - also very good - another album was for the European market from existing material together.

1988 was followed by their third album " Kolpez Kolpe ", their first album in Basque. Also the sound has evolved; there is now some wind instruments. In the subsequent tour they took ( on their last of about 280 concerts ) the double LP " Azken guda dantza " on. This was chosen by the magazine Maximum Rock & Roll one of the best live albums.

In the same year the band split - at the highlights of their popularity - on to avoid "creative standstill" ( around 1990 although much of it later on in the follow-up project Negu Gorriak ).
