Kos (regional unit)

The Regional District of Kos (Greek Periferiaki Enotita Ko Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Κω ) is one of 13 regional districts of the Greek region South Aegean. It was formed on the occasion of the administrative reform in 2010 from four island communities of the former Dodecanese Prefecture and corresponds exactly to the territory of the former province of Kos, which existed until 1997. Proportional to its 34 396 inhabitants, the area sends five deputies to the regional council, but has no more political significance than local authority. It is divided today into the two communities Kos and Nisyros.
