Kosovo Vilayet

The Vilayet of Kosovo ( Kosova Vilâyeti Turkish, Albanian Vilajeti i Kosovës, Serbian Косовски вилајет / Kosovski Vilayet, macedonian Покраина на Косово ) was a vilayet of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkan Peninsula. The capital was Üsküp, today's Skopje. The state religion was Islam.

History

The Vilayet of Kosovo was created by an administrative reform in 1877 from the province of Prizren in Rumelia.

The borders of the province shifted, when the Ottoman Empire - as a result of following the Russo - Turkish war 1877-1878 and the Berlin Congress - lost territories to neighboring countries. Including the city of Monastir - - Then also rich internal parts of the province of Kosovo were transferred to the province of Thessaloniki.

In 1878 came the Sanjak of Novi Pazar, a subdivision of the province of Kosovo, under the Austro -Hungarian military occupation, under which it remained until 1908. After the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913, the province between Montenegro, Serbia, Albania and Bulgaria was divided, and the divided areas incorporated in the respective states.
