Kostiantynivka

Kostjantyniwka (Ukrainian Костянтинівка; Russian Константиновка / Konstantinowka ) is a city in the Donetsk Oblast in Ukraine with 79 070 inhabitants ( 2013).

The place is the center of the Rajons same name, on the river Krywyj Torez, a tributary of the Don. Kostantyniwka is an industrial center in the Donets Basin, where there are mainly metal and glass processing and chemical industries. The Oblastzentrum Donetsk is located in 68 kilometers away.

History

Kostjantinywka originated in 1870 from a small settlement, which was founded by the great landowners Nomikossow and named in honor of his eldest son Kostyantyn. At the beginning of the 20th century the town developed into an industrial estate which was collected in 1926 in the rank of an urban-type settlement. 1932 Kostjantyniwka received city rights. The city was occupied 677 days of the German Wehrmacht. The occupation began on October 28, 1941 and ended on 6 September 1943, the recapture by the Red Army.
