Kot Diji

Kot Diji ( Urdu: کوٹ ڈیجی ) is a modern village and named after archaeological site in Pakistan. The place is situated on the left bank of the Indus, across from Mohenjo -daro. The ruins are located near a fortress that was built by Mir Suhrab ( 1803-30 ).

Kot Diji is for research of some importance, since such an older culture found among the layers of the Indus Valley Civilization, which can be dated from about 3400-2650 BC. The city was, like most places in the Indus Valley Civilization of two parts. There was a citadel and a real living city. This division existed in the period before the Indus Valley Civilization.

Typical findings of this early culture are round vessels with a grooved decoration and those with a collar edge, which often show a painting in black on a red ground. The special feature of many discoveries is that many of the ceramic forms are still taken in the Indus culture. Other discoveries prove this, so they found model cars and animal figures. Both Finds are also typical of the Indus culture.

Before the excavations at Kot Diji the origin of the Indus civilization remained enigmatic. There were no distinct culture that could be designated as a precursor. In Kot Diji one now found one that began around 3400 BC and then almost seamlessly merged with the Indus Valley Civilization.
