Kourion

Kourion Kourion also, Assyrian Ku -ri -i, Κούριον ancient Greek, Latin Curium, is an Iron Age city kingdom and an ancient city located west of the Kouris and Akrotiri peninsula on the southwest coast of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus to the west of present-day Limassol.

History

The city was probably built in the 13th century BC Strabo was Kourion as Argive foundation. The first mention of Kourions was 673/672 BC: Kition on the stele it is mentioned as " Ku -ri -i".

To the west of Kourion was a peninsula, were thrown from the wicked who had touched the altar of Apollo, into the sea.

Archeology

The excavations of ancient Kourion captured several buildings with numerous well-preserved floor mosaics, including the "Gladiator House ", the " House of Achilles " (both named after motifs dortiger mosaics), the "Villa of the Eustolios " (5th century AD), a theater with sea view (1st -2nd century AD), an agora, an early Christian Basilica and the " earthquake house" with the skeletons of an earthquake surprised human and animal inhabitants.

About two kilometers away is a sanctuary of the Roman era worshiped in Kourion Apollo Hylates.
