Kousséri

Province

Kousséri ( German Kusseri also ) is a city in the province of Extrême -Nord, which forms the northern tip of Cameroon. It lies on the River Logone and on the border with Chad.

Kousséri is the capital of the district of Logone -et- Chari and an important trading center for goods from the neighboring country. Therefore, the city in the recent past has grown very rapidly. One estimate in 2005 estimated 180,000 inhabitants for the city proper, another 2007, approximately 500,000 including suburban belt.

History

The story Kousséris reaches back at least into the culture of Sao. The current name is of Arabic origin and derived from Qussur ( locks). In the 16th century it became a vassal Islamized city of the Kingdom of Kanem -Bornu.

On April 22, 1900, the city scene of the Battle of Kousséri between the Afro- Arab warlord Rabih az- Zubayr, who had subjected Bornu in 1893, and French colonial troops under Colonel Amédée -François Lamy. Both commanders found in the battle to death. The ultimately victorious French troops occupied the city and gave it a year later to the German colonial forces. Since then Kousséri belonged to the colony of Kamerun in 1903 and the seat of the German Residentur Tschadseeländer (up to 1913). According to the principle of indirect rule of local rulers ( Miarre ) remained under German administration in office, but was de facto bound by the instructions of Residentur.
