Koutloumousiou monastery

The monastery Koutloumousiou (Greek Μονή Κουτλουμουσίου ) is an Eastern Orthodox monastery in the monastic state on the peninsula of Mount Athos in Greece. In the hierarchy of the Athonite monasteries it is in sixth place. It is one of the twenty self-governing monasteries on Athos and the Transfiguration of Christ was dedicated.

History

The monastery was probably founded in 1150, the first written reference dates back to the year 1169. At that time the neighboring monastery Alypiou was assumed in 1428 Koutloumousiou. After efforts of later Abbot Chariton of Imbros the monastery donations received from Bulgaria, Serbia and Wallachia, which makes it rise in the hierarchy of Athos monasteries of point 17 of the then 25 monasteries on the present rank in 1534.
