Kowloon City

Kowloon City (formerly Kowloon Walled City ) is a densely populated district of Hong Kong.

The present district of Kowloon City is located on the territory of the former Kowloon Walled City. The settlement was originally an area surrounded by a wall of Chinese military fort. After Kronkolonarisierung it was leased to the United Kingdom. The population in Kowloon Walled City rose after the end of the Japanese occupation in World War II time dramatically. In the 1950s to 1970s, Kowloon City was dominated mainly by triads, drugs and prostitution. 1987 Hong Kong government announced, Kowloon Walled City demolish. After a long process, the demolition work began in 1993 and were completed in 1994. Some buildings have been preserved, such as the South Gate or the Yamen. On the grounds of the former walled city, opened in December 1995, the Kowloon Walled City Park.
