Kozelets

Kozelets (Ukrainian and Russian Козелець ) is an urban-type settlement in the Chernihiv Oblast of Ukraine and the center of the same name Rajons with 8,900 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2005). It is located on the River Easter.

History

Kozelets 1098 was first mentioned as a fortress of Kievan Rus. In the 17th century the place was known as a great fortress and was in 1656 awarded the Magdeburg Law. After the Tatar invasion of 1669 Kozelets was partially destroyed.

After the collapse of the Russian Empire and the subsequent civil war was Kozelets part of the Soviet Union, was in 1924 deprived urban status and was instead an urban-type settlement.
